History:
1938 Egyptian Metal Works (EMW) is founded in a small warehouse in the traditional center for copper and brass crafting in Cairo. The operation consisted mainly of the production of copper and silver ingot alloys. 1958 The company begins to manufacture and trade non ferrous metals. A rolling mill is acquired, and copper bars and wire are produced. A small factory opens which manufactures valves and water taps, using pressure die-casting machines and friction presses. These products are mostly sold to 'The General Authority for Potable Water,' in Cairo and Alexandria. 1970 A second factory opens for the refining of copper, and the drawing of copper and aluminium pipes. 1978 A third factory with a total space of 20,000 m2 is built in the industrial zone in Helwan, a suburb of Cairo. With this factory, which later becomes the current headquarters of Egyptian Metal Works, an integrated industry is created that includes melting and refining furnaces. 1982 A Schloemman hydraulic extrusion press is added to produce brass, copper and aluminium wire, bars and tubes. 1994 Copper and aluminium sheets and discs are produced as part of the flat product range. This is made possible by the acquisition of a production line that consists of melting furnaces and a hot-rolling machine. 1998 A Maerz drum type refining furnace is installed for production of fire refined wire bars and billets from copper scrap. Also a wire bar hot rolling mill is installed for production of wire rod. 2000 A semi-continuous casting line for brass billets is installed to replace permanent mould casting. The line consists of two melting furnaces (5 tons capacity) and 1 holding and casting furnace (8 tons capacity). The line produces 2 billets (8 meters long and 160 mm in diameter) simultaneously. 2001 EMW contracts with Mount ISA in Australia to purchase the license and technology for the ISA process of copper electro refining to produce Grade A copper cathodes. Construction of tank-house building begins. 2002 A sket cold rolling mill is installed to further process hot rolled aluminium and copper strip down to thicknesses of as little as 0.5 mm. 2003 2 bell type bright annealing furnaces are installed for bright annealing of copper wire and strip. Also a cut to length line is installed for production of copper and aluminium sheets from round coils. For the first time, EMW runs an integrated melting, hot and cold rolling plants, plus annealing, and cut-to-length lin
